Overview

Overview

This trip is the most adventurous version yet of the Pakistan Tuk-Tuk Challenge: a 10-day, 3-wheeled journey from Skardu to Khunjerab Pass deep in Gilgit-Baltistan. It runs like an "Amazing Race"-style challenge, with teams driving custom Tuk-Tuks through surreal high-altitude landscapes, alpine deserts, and ancient mountain communities, backed by a crew of mechanics, medics, and fixers along the way.

The route opens with training in the Sarfaranga Cold Desert, one of the world's highest cold deserts, before following the Karakoram Highway between three legendary mountain ranges — the Karakoram, the Himalayas, and the Hindu Kush — toward Gilgit and into the Hunza Valley. Highlights along the way include Attabad Lake, the Hussaini Suspension Bridge, the jagged Passu Cones, and a full day's push to Khunjerab Pass at 4,693m, the highest paved border crossing in the world, before looping back through Hunza and finishing in Gilgit.

Accommodation for 9 nights (1 room per team), Tuk-Tuk hire with third-party liability insurance, arrival-day training, mechanic and medical support, permits, a luggage truck, a welcome pack, an awards ceremony and farewell party, and half board (breakfast and dinner) are included. Flights, visas, and airport transfers are not included, nor are rickshaw spare parts and repairs (roughly $40–$120 per team), fuel (roughly $100 per team), or day-to-day costs like lunch and drinks (roughly $30/day). The trip starts in Skardu and ends in Gilgit, both of which require internal flights to/from Islamabad — arranged separately by travelers, with the operator's local team available to help.

Itinerary

Settle into Skardu, meet the Large Minority team, complete registration, and get your first Tuk-Tuk training briefing. Overnight at Khoj Resort Shigar, overlooking the Shigar River and Karakoram Range. Welcome dinner included.

Day 2 — Khoj Resort to Shangri-La Resort, 65 km (Sat, Sep 18)

A full driving lesson at the Sarfaranga Cold Desert, one of the world's highest cold deserts, builds confidence behind the wheel before the ride to Shangri-La Resort, known for its red cabins around a crystal-clear lake. Breakfast and dinner included.

Day 3 — Shangri-La to Gilgit, 180 km (Sun, Sep 19)

The Karakoram Highway threads between three legendary ranges — the Karakoram, the Himalayas, and the Hindu Kush — with a stop at Jaglot where two rivers and three mountain ranges meet. Overnight at the Ramada Resort Gilgit. Breakfast and dinner included.

Day 6 — The Ultimate Border Run: Sost to Khunjerab Pass and back, 85 km (Wed, Sep 22)

The Karakoram Highway climbs to Khunjerab Pass (4,693m), the highest paved border crossing in the world, with a stop at the Pakistan–China border gate and a chance to spot Himalayan ibex, Marco Polo sheep, or snow leopards. Return to Sost for the evening. Breakfast and dinner included.
